Travel The Grand Canal

On your travels you will navigate the Grand Canal. Constructed in 1786 when the canal reached Monasterevin.  It was once a route for goods to and from Dublin until the nineteenth century when the train system became a faster option.

Today the Grand Canal is being developed as a tourist and leisure amenity and to provide a waterway to the rivers Barrow and Shannon. There are many beautiful walks along the banks of the canal, which team with flora and fauna. The waters provide good fishing for pike, perch, bream, and roach.

A perfect way to while away the afternoons. Watching the world slowly pass by and taking in the sights and sounds of the countryside.

Monasterevin

Monasterevan, will be your starting point. It is a small town in County Kildare and about an hours drive from Dublin. Siobhan or Anne will meet you here to give you a rundown of the Barge and begin the lesson.

The town lies on the River Barrow and the Barrowline, a canal branch of the Grand Canal. ( giving it the nickname the Venice of Ireland)

You can stock up on boat supplies from here, Have a delicious pint in one of the many pubs
